Portfolio Rap.

What I'm spitting on my blog is a dare to you.

Hotter then Nando's chicken, putting on a stew!

Getting messy with my cv, letting it flow.

Putting on my idea face, screaming LET'S GO!

Because I'm immortal, with sharpie in hand.

Conquered Germany and Loughborough, just read the letter man!

Already next door, drinking tea with the queen.

Hold on sec, I have just done this portfolio, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QJHAgVzL6o.

Now a tribute to the big OMB!

Helped me think fast, with a mind built to speed.

With no limit, its pointless to run.

Just a minute..

and Im already finished, off to Watford.

Tough luck!

Business Card Portfolio.

D&AD New Blood 2015 is coming thick and fast as Cannes Lions 2015 nears a end.

I am stressing not because of the event but my work.

I don't like any of it, its not good enough, I need bigger and better ideas to show!

Plus my overall presentation has to be unusual but simple, not the big black heavy traditional portfolio holders you commonly see.

It got me thinking... ahhh thats it!

I printed sooo many business cards, specially designed to scamp on, so I might as well use them up for the event, here is my special 1st edition!

That when it hit me, a business card portfolio!

Quick, light and adjustable, which means I can edit the shit out of it without disturbing my work, like if they want to keep it for further assessment, you know these CDs.

Nothing fancy, does not cost a arm or a leg!

Oh wait or should it be called business card pitch, I present a idea through my business cards there and then!

Oh the possibilities, I was scared of spending money, and I have found a way around it.

I must have over 300 business cards left!

Anyhow back to the point, my real intention is to make some noise at D&AD, hey look at me!

If I take into account what I said in my last post of thinking deeper, combing it with my business card portfolio, I am sure I can make far better presentation then my past work at Tony's Interview.

So here is my event to all those CDs out there at D&AD New Blood 2015 organising their own.

Come and have a piece of my portfolio!

Think deeper!

I have finally register to Campaign to improve on my terrible score on Tony's quiz, and I have came across this beauty making noise at Cannes Lions by Grey London, check this video out!

This idea to advertise the brand Volvo on their strategy of safety, is clever for how it positions a car brand in support of cyclists on the dangerous roads at night, quiet a funny mix for its usually drivers vs cyclists, but also its a idea that helps the target market, not just a buy me, like a print ad for the latest iPhone.

To my point this Cannes Prix winner makes me feel what Tony told me at the interview, that I need to add more depth to my thinking, that means less being genetic, more being specific, finding a human truth, which in the case of Volvo's 'Life Paint', the problem that there are too many crashes with cyclist at night, solving it with invisible glow in the dark spay paint.

You spot a problem, you solve it, in the case its a truth, another example on the news the problem with immigrants hitching rides on lorries going over to England, a ad agency could create a solution to solve this problem in the process advertising a brand, lets say Michelin releases stinky tires, the oder scares away the immigrants grabbing onto the truck.

Product innovation is something I recall Crispin Porter Bogusky doing, like there idea for chicken fries to their client Burger King, but anyhow going a little off track.

A idea needs to be more then just benefit on safety, it has to go deeper into a problem, a human truth of whats going on, Grey London built that up with a unique angle on road safety for cyclists, quiet unusual for a car brand.

Tony saids I have shallow thinking in my work at the moment, thats because I only communicated 'safety' from the perspective of this idea I am using as reference, and thats it, I didn't go beyond considering cyclist safety, crash % etc.

Think deeper!

Tony I got in!

It was over two years ago I set on a mission to get into Tony's legion, known as 'The Watford Course' or 'The Oxbridge of Advertising' as noted by many professionals in the industry.

I was focused on this goal of getting into my dream course, and so I drew up ideas everyday thanks to being part of the community of One Minutes Briefs.

However it was not just that I answered almost every brief that Nick (Head of One Minutes Briefs) released, becoming a respected member and stacking up some wins, but the energy I gave out as a creative to be noticed in this industry.

That flash of liveliness caught the attention of Tony himself, and I soon knew I was on track, but due to having bad patience which I need to sort out, I could not wait any longer for a interview date, and went looking for other opportunities.

This lead me to find SCA2, who contacted me straight away, invited me to their interview day, it was a amazing experience, I met many great creatives looking to break into the industry there, it was a very warm welcome and I made a splash with my presentation in front of the class, here is a taster!

At that point after being accepted, that was it I have settle on where I was going, but then Tony announced the interview day, and I received a email from West Herts College asking if I was going.

Well I have been waiting over two years for this, so yes, lets finally meet Tony and witness his interviewing process which I had researched so much into.

I came to Publicis London on Baker Street where the Tony interview was stationed, I was guided by a kind reception to the cafe where the Watford mentors and interviewees sat waiting for the clock to tick ready for the big interview.

Then we all went to the top floor into a boardroom for the interview, given a long speech by Tony on what to expect on the course, soon lead by a quiz on the industry which I sadly got a 4/10 on, followed by a book critic.

And what can I say, I was stunned, in a good way to be extract, his critic was harsh but brutality honest, and I loved that, because that is what the creative industry is like, its not easy, and your going to get your work ripped to pieces over and over again until you achieve something great, Tony basically gave us a reality check.

So there I met someone who completely destroyed my portfolio I had prepared, ate it up and spat it out, he told me it lacked depth in thinking, that there was not range of products that could stretch me and that all my ideas where the same etc... however he did say I had energy.

I said to myself after the interview, here is someone who can really push me to the edge, that can break me and reinvent me into far better creative, a creative that can climb to the top of the industry!

The interview blew me away, and all I could think about, dream about was getting onto that course, that release of life to improve to be better, I discarded my portfolio, to me it was shit, I needed to do far much better, Tony had opened my eyes.

So when the email came through the next day from Tony offering me a place, I had to look at it 1000 times to be sure it was real, and when my nerve was settled slightly I celebrated!

The official letter came I accepted the offer, and I was calm, job done, I had succeeded in making my dream become a reality!

Tony I got in!
